Civil rights icon, activist, author, and speaker Ruby Bridges spoke at Yale’s MLK event to a capacity crowd at Woolsey Hall on Jan. 24. Bridges shared accounts of her experiences and called on all in attendance to actively push toward combating barriers that divide people.

Following the discussion, New Haven Promise Scholar, Yale junior Kiana Flores (right), the Ward 1 alder and a ’21 Co-Op graduate, spoke of her connection and history to the City drawing loud applause.

A political science major, Flores followed another Promise Scholar — Alex Guzhnay — as the alder presiding over the Yale campus and its residential colleges.
