Four New Haven Promise interns spent the summer contributing to vital environmental research at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE). Their work ranged from studying the impact of invasive insects on forests to investigating natural methods of carbon capture and improving agricultural sustainability. Guided by YSE faculty and graduate mentors, students like Xavier Murrell (UConn ’24) and Kaleb Diaz Alvarez (UConn ’26) collected field data on forest ecosystems affected by the emerald ash borer, a destructive pest, while others like Young In Kim (Yale ’27) and Gershon Ariker (UConn ’25) focused on climate solutions, such as enhanced weathering with basalt and agricultural liming. The internships provided hands-on experience and opened doors to career paths the students hadn’t previously considered. Read more here.
